Dubai: A top official from Al Shabab has high hopes the basketball team’s recent triumph will push them forward towards even more glorious moment in the future.

“This is just the start we needed to our season. We took part in this tournament with the intention of winning and kicking off our season in the best possible manner,” Faris Al Mutawa’a, in-charge of ball games at Al Shabab, told Gulf News.

Al Mutawa’a was speaking after Al Shabab recorded their biggest-ever triumph last week when they won the Second Al Shabab International Basketball Championship by defeating Hoops of Lebanon 90-75 in the final.

“We had set a goal before the coach and the coaching staff prior to the start of the competition. Our goal was always to win and I am glad the players were able to achieve this by keeping their focus,” Al Mutawa’a said.

Last week’s win at the Second Al Shabab International Basketball Championship was possibly among the highlights for Al Shabab. “We won the Gulf Clubs Basketball Cup two years back and this win is definitely among the highpoints for us,” the official added.

“We only hope our players do not lose their focus as the season takes off.”

Long-time Al Shabab coach Mohammad Omar who has been with the club for the past eight years now, also hoped his players could keep the momentum going. “It’s easy to win, but can be a tough task to stay on top,” Omar said.

“I have been telling my players that they need to celebrate this win because they deserve this. But once this is over we need to focus on the rest of the season, set fresh goals and go about achieving these,” the coach added.
