Dubai: New Indian Model School (NIMS), Sharjah, emerged as the champions in the JSS International School Naland Memorial Inter-School Basketball tournament for the second year running with a fine all-round display. JSS got the better of The Millennium School 26-5 to once again stamp their supremacy in UAE inter-school basketball tournaments.

Umair Khan of NIMS, who propelled his team with sterling performances throughout the tournament, top-scored in the final too with 10 points and was rightly adjudged the player of the tournament. Thirteen schools participated in the tournament.

Rajan Job, the president of the Indian Basketball Society, who was the chief guest, reminded the participants of the importance of team work. “Basketball is a team game. Always remember that all five players need not have the same amount of shots but everyone must give their best,” he said.

The tournament is named in memory of JSS School student Naland, who passed away in the Mangalore air crash three years ago.

The tournament, which started off with nine schools, is now among the popular basketball tournaments in the UAE, with four more schools joining the competition. During the tournament, the school invites top basketball players to inspire the players.

Last year, Tom Thomas, a former international player for India at the junior level, told the participants that: “Concentration and consistent display of skills makes a player better every day. A basketball team is like the five fingers on your hand. If you can get them all together, you have a fist. That’s how I would want you to play the game.”

JSS recently announced that they will host the tournament every year.
