Dubai: The success of Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra rouses incredible pride in the UAE’s Filipino expats, many of whom now consider him the pride of their home nation.

Philip Borbon, 31, a media web content executive who lives in Karama, said: “With his hands on the controls, he was able to find a way to improve a great team, making them two-time champions. Being able to handle three superstars and creating a system that maximises the talent, he has made the team believe in him, ensuring their victory. Proud to be Pinoy!”

Gennie Hernandez, 24, a receptionist of Discovery Gardens, said: “The play-offs and finals showed the new big three of the Miami Heat — LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Coach Spoelstra! It just feels great that a Filipino was part of a team that wins championships.”

Melanie Robles, 32, a sales coordinator living in Mankhool, said: “For someone who gets criticised a lot when his team loses, it is about time that he got the credit since he steered Miami Heat to the championship not just once but twice. I’m just simply happy for Coach Spo. He made Filipinos proud.”

Rodelito Mamuad, 35, an editorial assistant of Satwa, added: “As a Filipino, I consider Erik Spoelstra as a treasure, a hero and a true example of Pinoy pride. His contribution in the international sporting scene brought every individual Filipino an inspiration that race is not a hindrance to do well and to be known in the world.”
