Dubai:  Dubai Modern High School and the Indian High School emerged champions of the first Modern inter-school basketball tournament organised by Dubai Modern High School at their school grounds recently.

Dubai Modern boys stopped New Indian Model School (NIMS) from Sharjah in a thriller. The final was a neck-and-neck battle from the start. The scores were 35 all at the third quarter but good team work and solid defence enabled Dubai Modern to break away on the fourth and went on to win 41-37.

The Indian High School girls stood out in this tournament. In the final, they rose to the challenge displaying their dexterity and team combination to trounce Millennium School 25-7.

Enormous talent

"We are delighted by enormous talent exhibited by the boys and girls in this tournament. All the 16 schools competed strongly displaying excellent sportsmanship and camaraderie," remarked Herman Gomes, the chief organiser of the event, to Gulf News.

Some of the players won individual awards. B.S. Ritu, who put up an outstanding performance in Indian High School's triumph, bagged the best player of the tournament award.

Though the Indian High School boys finished only third beating St Mary's School 44-32, their star player Aakash Mahajan bagged the best player award. In the battle for third place, Delhi Private School, Sharjah girls beat Our Own English High School from Dubai 18-10.

Arushi Attri of the Millennium School was adjudged the most promising players while Shorey Chopra of Dubai Modern emerged as the most promising players among the boys.

Nargish Khambatta, vice principal of Dubai Modern gave away the prizes to the winners.
