Dubai: Delhi Private School (DPS), Dubai, annexed the 25th NIMS Trophy Basketball Tournament beating Winchester School, Dubai, 67-59 in an exciting final played in Sharjah on Tuesday.

DPS Dubai started confidently with Hanan Nisar’s three-pointer as they went on to lead 22-19 at the end of the opening period. The game went neck-and-neck in the second quarter, but DPS managed to increase their lead marginally to four points 40-36 by the end of the second quarter.

Hanan and Ishan Shoukath scored all their team’s 17 points in the third quarter against Winchester’s 13 points. In the final quarter, Ishan had a tight control on things while being the lone scorer for DPS with ten points and that was enough to secure his team the title.

Hanan Nisar topscored for the winners with 31 points and Ishan had 21 points, while Satyajith (19) and Akshay Kumar (13) did well for the losing side.

Ishan Shoukath won the MVP award and Sharan Sakarla of DPS Dubai was adjudged the promising player of the tournament.

Earlier in the semi-finals, DPS, Dubai, had got the better of DPS, Sharjah, 41-34, while Winchester School, Dubai, defeated hosts NIMS, Sharjah, 63-46.

Reza Khan, Specialist Director, Wild Life and Zoo Management, Dubai Municipality; KR Surendran Nair, Director Education and Training, NIMS Group of Schools; Prof Nusky Jamal, Principal, NIMS, Sharjah; and Sharfudeen, Principal, Central School, Dubai, gave away the prizes.

The NIMS Silver Jubilee Tournament was supported by Salama Contracting, Ajman, Atlas Educational Institute, Ajman, Yanbua Mineral Water, Ajman, Al Ain Juice and Al Rawabi.

Presented and organised by New Indian Model School, Sharjah, the NIMS Trophy Basketball was first held in 1989 in an attempt to give schools in the UAE an opportunity for top-level basketball.
