Dubai: The Blue team maintained a perfect record on the opening day of the first Alfonso Cavite Philippines Association UAE Chapter Sports Festival that got under way at the Shaikha Hind Bin Maktoum Al Maktoum Indoor Sports Hall on Saturday.

The Blue team secured a 15-8, 15-11 win over the Black team in the volleyball tournament and then romped to a 52-39 win against the Black team in the basketball tournament later in the day.

Mojita topscored for the winners with 17 points, while Vislenio pushed in 10 points along with a single three-pointer for the Blue team, and Damboo was the highest scorer for the Black team with 14 points.

Also tasting victory in the basketball competition was the Red team, which achieved a narrow 37-31 result against the Violet team, but the Violets made amends in the volleyball competition with a 15-11, 12-15, 16-14 result against the Reds.

Noli Mojares and Ryan Valencian scored 11 points apiece in the Red team's win, while Joseph Reyes fought well with 12 points that included a couple of shots from outside the circle.

Edgar Rivera, President, Alfonso Cavite Philippines Association, UAE Chapter, said: "The basic idea of this competition is to have the UAE residents from Cavite under one roof in the true spirit of friendship and community".

"We want to use sports as a platform to foster growth, both personal and community level, so that we contribute towards the development of society as a whole. Our long-term plan is to assist in community development back home in the Philippines," he added.

The second such sports day will be held at the same venue on Al Wasl Road on October 15, and will eventually culminate in the grand finals in Abu Dhabi in January 2011.

Alfonso is a third-class municipality in the province of Cavite in the Philippines.

A recent survey noted that Alfonso has a population of about 50,000 spread over an area measuring 70 square kilometres. It is 74km from Manila via Tagaytay City.
