Dubai: Los Angeles Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will be in the UAE on October 28 to kick start the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre (ICLDC) ‘Take a Step for Diabetes Week with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’.

His week-long visit will feature a series of health and fitness events aimed at combating the prevalence of diabetes in the UAE.

“We are very excited to have Kareem visit the UAE in support of ICLDC’s healthy lifestyle campaign,” said Bashar Al Ramahi, ICLDC’s chief executive officer.

“His participation in various community events hosted by our centres in the UAE will really help re-enforce the message that a balanced diet and regular exercise are the smart, simple steps needed.”

Al Ramahi added that Abdul-Jabbar’s support in getting these messages out to the nation is especially valuable as the countdown begins for ICLDC’s annual community event, #Walk2014 on November 7, which precedes World Diabetes Day on November 14.

Sarah Omolewu, managing partner of event managers Maven Marketing and Events said: “Following the success of our Kobe Bryant Health & Fitness Weekend last year, we are pleased to collaborate with Imperial College London Diabetes Centre as our title partner for this year’s event. As the region’s leader in diabetes treatment, education and research, we look forward to working with ICLDC and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to increase public health awareness by utilising the campaign to engage the local community about the importance of active lifestyles.”

Abdul-Jabbar, 67, is a seven foot, two inch, former centre, who amassed six NBA championships and 19 all-star team selections in a 20-year career from 1969 to 1989. He is still the NBA’s all-time leading scorer with 38,387 points.
