Los Angeles: Trea Turner hit for the cycle and drove in a career-high seven runs on Tuesday as the Washington Nationals beat the Colorado Rockies 15-12 in Denver.
Turner, who went 4-for-6 at the plate, singled in the first inning, doubled home two runs in the second, hit his first homer of the season in the sixth.
The Nationals shortstop completed the cycle — hitting for a single, double, triple and home run — with a triple that scored three runs in the seventh.
Daniel Murphy tied his career high with five runs-batted-in while going 3-for-5 with a three-run triple that highlighted a five-run second inning against Rockies pitcher German Marquez, who was making his 2016 debut.
Marquez lasted four innings, giving up nine hits and eight runs.
Nationals starter Joe Ross didn’t qualify for the win as he worked just 4 2/3 innings. He allowed five runs on seven hits.
Turner’s triple highlighted a five-run seventh that put the Nationals ahead 15-5. But the Rockies scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning and four in the eighth when Charlie Blackmon hit a two-run homer.
It was the second cycle of the 2017 Major League Baseball season. The San Diego Padres’ Wil Myers also hit for the cycle against the Rockies at Coors Field on April 10.
