Los Angeles: Stephen Strasburg’s first start since returning from the disabled list did not last long on Wednesday as the Washington Nationals ace injured his elbow in the third inning and was removed from the game.
Strasburg had been on the disabled list with elbow soreness before being activated to face the Atlanta Braves for his first start since Aug. 17.
He struck out opposing pitcher Mike Foltynewicz in the third then was visited by manager Dusty Baker who patted him on the stomach before removing him.
Baker said Strasburg felt a pinch in the back of his elbow and will undergo an MRI to examine the extent of the injury.
Strasburg was charged with one run and two hits with four strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.
The Nationals went on to beat Atlanta 5-4 in 11 innings to stay 8.5 games in front in the National League East.
Strasburg, 28, has endured his share of injuries throughout his career but had been enjoying a strong season with a 15-4 record and 3.60 ERA.
