Oakland, California: Jesse Chavez pitched eight impressive innings and Stephen Vogt hit a two-run homer to give the Oakland Athletics their first series win since the beginning of May with a 3-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday.
Chavez (2-5) was extremely efficient in snapping his three-game losing streak and even got some rare run support when Vogt broke open a scoreless game with his homer in the sixth against Adam Warren. Chavez allowed seven hits and no walks, striking out six.
Chavez and Tyler Clippard protected that lead to help the A’s take three of four from New York for their first series win since winning two of three against Texas from May 1-3. Oakland had lost five series and split one since then. Clippard got three outs for his seventh save in eight chances.
Warren (3-4) allowed two runs and six hits over seven innings in his fourth straight quality start for the Yankees, who have lost six of seven on the road and 13 of 18 overall.
The A’s have struggled to give Chavez any support this season, failing to score a single run in his past two starts and in four of seven appearances since he joined the rotation in late April. He had six total runs of support in his seven starts.
It looked as if Chavez was in for another tough-luck game when Warren breezed through the first five innings. But that changed in the sixth when Billy Burns got things started with one of his three hits and then promptly stole second and third.
Warren got Ben Zobrist on a shallow fly that kept Burns at third base. Vogt left no doubt when he followed with a drive into the right-field seats for his 11th home run of the season.
Vogt added a sacrifice fly in the eighth, scoring Burns once again, to give the A’s a 3-0 lead. Vogt has a career-high 38 RBIs, surpassing the mark of 35 he set last season.
