New York: New York’s Noah Syndergaard struck out 10 batters to guide the Mets to a 2-0 win against Washington on Tuesday, cutting the gap between the National League East division’s top two teams to half a game.

It was a timely win for the Mets after four successive defeats, and gave them a victory over Daniel Murphy, who starred for New York in their run to the World Series last year before moving to the Nationals.

Philadelphia remains level with the Mets in the tightly contested NL East after beating Miami, while the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs lost at Milwaukee.

In the clash of American League division leaders, Seattle won easily at Baltimore.

Washington’s Murphy returned to Citi Field with a major league-best .400 batting average and drew two early standing ovations, then got booed. He got one of the five hits off Syndergaard, who pitched seven scoreless innings.
