New York: Greg Bird emphatically ended a 0-for-20 skid with a long home run off Adam Wainwright and New York ran their winning streak to seven games with a 9-3 victory over St. Louis.

Bird began the night hitting .038 but when New York’s latest win concluded, the first baseman held a .138 average. Besides hitting a 429-foot home run, Bird also doubled off Wainwright and hooked a breaking ball foul over the right field wall in the sixth before drawing a walk against Matt Bowman.

Aaron Judge added an RBI triple and Aaron Hicks contributed a solo home run and sacrifice fly as the Yankees improved to 6-0 at home for the first time since winning their first seven home games of the 114-win 1998 season.

Taijuan Walker pitched one-run ball over five innings as Arizona defeated Los Angeles 3-1.

Walker (2-1) gave up four hits. The right-hander walked one and struck out seven in beating the Dodgers for the first time in his second career start against Los Angeles. Fernando Rodney handled the ninth for his fourth save.

Bryce Harper hit a three-run homer with two outs in the last of the ninth off Joaquin Benoit as the Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4 on Sunday, taking two of three games in the series.

The blast capped a big day in which Harper went 3-for-5 with two homers and five RBIs.

Alcides Escobar’s ninth-inning single scored pinch runner Raul Mondesi as Kansas City blanked Los Angeles 1-0 to complete a sweep of the three-game series.

Mondesi was running for Salvador Perez, who led off the inning with a single. Mondesi swiped second and moved to third on a Blake Parker wild pitch.

Trey Mancini hit two home runs, Craig Gentry and Manny Machado added one homer each, Dylan Bundy pitched six scoreless innings and Baltimore defeated Toronto 11-4.

Bundy (2-1) allowed five hits and one walk while striking out six as the Orioles (8-3) took three of four from the Blue Jays (2-10).

Alex Avila hit a two-run home run and Matthew Boyd pitched six strong innings as Detroit beat Cleveland 4-1.

The Tigers won two of three games from the slumping Indians, who went 2-4 on their season-opening homestand. Cleveland have lost seven of their last nine games.

Bartolo Colon was masterful for seven innings, with the only hit the 43-year-old gave up a homer, and Atlanta improved to 3-0 at SunTrust Park with a victory over San Diego 9-2.

Ryan Schimpf’s homer in the third inning was the only misstep by Colon, who walked one and struck out six while pitching in the 44th ballpark of his 20-year major league career.

Meanwhile, Pinch hitter J.T. Riddle hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to lead Miami over New York 4-2.

It was Riddle’s first career home run, and it came off reliever Addison Reed (0-1).
