Cleveland: Miguel Cabrera homered twice and drove in four runs as the Detroit Tigers won their first six games of the season for the first time in 30 years with an 8-5 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday.

Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the first off T.J. House (0-1), and J.D. Martinez added a solo shot in the ninth as the Tigers finished off a three-game sweep.

Cabrera went 4 for 4 with his first two homers this season, a double and single. With Cabrera needing a triple for the cycle, Indians manager Terry Francona intentionally walked him in the eighth even though there was a runner on first.

New York slugger Alex Rodriguez hit a three-run double in a seven-run first-inning outburst as the Yankees trounced the Boston Red Sox 14-4 for their second win in six games to avoid what would have been their worst start since 1989.

Chase Headley and Stephen Drew had consecutive homers against Clay Buchholz (1-1), who allowed 10 runs - nine earned - and nine hits in 3 1-3 innings. Rodriguez drove in four runs, and New York had 16 hits.

Masahiro Tanaka (1-1) survived one wild stretch to earn his first victory and with five solid innings somewhat put to rest concern about his right elbow. Brian McCann hit his 200th career homer.

Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen homered and drove in four runs in his return to the Pirates lineup and Neil Walker hit a three-run shot in a dominating 10-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.

In Miami, Nathan Karns (1-1) allowed two runs - one earned - and two hits in seven innings for his second career victory as the Tampa Bay Rays downed the Marlins 8-5.

Miami reserve third baseman Don Kelly and backup catcher Jeff Mathis suffered similar injuries that forced them from the game. Each broke the ring finger on his right hand.

David DeJesus had a three-run homer off Henderson Alvarez (0-2) that helped the Rays build a 7-2 lead.

Washington’s Wilson Ramos drove in the decisive run in the 10th with his second RBI of the day as the Nationals edged the Philadelphia Phillies 4-3, while Bartolo Colon helped himself with his first RBI in a decade in the New York Mets’ 4-3 win over the Atlanta Braves.

In other games, Chris Sale (1-0) struck out eight batters over six innings in his return from a broken bone in his right foot, allowing one run and five hits as the Chicago White Sox downed the Minnesota Twins 6-2, the Houston Astros defeated the Texas Rangers 6-4, the Kansas City Royals trounced the Los Angeles Angels 9-2 and the Seattle Mariners sneaked past the Oakland Athletics 8-7.

Former Rockies player Dexter Fowler hit a two-run homer off a hanging slider from LaTroy Hawkins (1-1) on an 0-2 pitch with two outs in the ninth inning as the Chicago Cubs prevailed 6-5 over Colorado, the San Diego Padres beat the San Francisco Giants 6-4, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-4 and the St. Louis Cardinals were 7-5 winners over the Cincinnati Reds.
