Dubai: A new fitness craze is set to take the UAE by storm after Dubai resident Candice Howe won the top accolade in the Reebok CrossFit Asian Games held last month in Okinawa, Japan.

Crowned the ‘Fittest Woman in Asia', Howe beat six other CrossFit hopefuls from across the region to claim the title and will now compete against the other regional finalists in the world event in Los Angeles from July 29-31.

Incredibly motivating

Howe said: "Claiming the title is an incredibly motivating achievement personally and a great way to raise awareness in the UAE of the tremendous health and lifestyle benefits that training in CrossFit can bring. I had no idea I would come this far."

CrossFit is a strength and conditioning programme based on performing functional movements from real life such as picking up objects and climbing stairs. Routines include running, rowing, power-lifting and weightlifting techniques.

A core community of individuals in Dubai has been practising CrossFit for more than five years, but it was only at the end of 2010 that the emirate has seen the setting up of affiliates.
