Dubai: The UAE National Olympic Committee (NOC) has thanked His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, for persistently backing the sporting movement in the UAE.

Earlier this week, Shaikh Mohammad released a grant of Dh35 million so that the UAE NOC can complete its new headquarters in the Al Nahda 1 area. The cost of construction of the new building had been estimated at Dh16.5 million and was scheduled to accommodate all 21 sports associations that are recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Speaking at the organisation’s 37th general assembly on Wednesday, Abdul Rahman Al Owais, UAE NOC Vice President and Chairman of the Executive Office, announced that the grant will ensure completion of the structure while also helping in the interior decorations.

The meeting was also attended by Major General Mohammad Hilal Al Ka’abi, Second Vice President, Mohammad Al Kamali, Secretary General, Dawoud Al Hajri, Assistant Secretary General, and representatives of the various sports associations.

Meanwhile, the UAE NOC honoured the various Chefs de Missions and heads of sports delegations who led the UAE’s participation at various international competitions during 2014 and 2015.

Among those honoured were Ahmad Al Falasi, President of the UAE Swimming Association (Second Youth Olympic Games, Nanjing, China); Abdul Rahman Al Owais (17th Asian Games, Incheon, South Korea); Saeed Hareb, General Secretary of the Dubai Sports Council (Fourth Beach Games, Phuket, Thailand); Ahmad Al Tayeb, Manager of the UAE NOC Sports and Technical Affairs Committee, and Brigadier Abdul Malik Jani, Member of the UAE NOC Technical Committee.

Noura Al Suwaidi, UAE NOC Board Member, and Hamda Al Shamsi, Member of the NOC Technical Committee and Chef de Mission, were also honoured for the roles they played when the UAE participated at the Fourth GCC Women’s Games held in Muscat, Oman, earlier this year.
