Abu Dhabi: The UAE won two athletics gold medals in the second GCC Women's Games as Saeeda Al Nabi took the javelin title and Ahlam Saeed bagged the gold in the 400m at the Armed Forces Physical Training Stadium.

Saeeda registered a 19.85 metre throw followed by Saleha Mohammad from Bahrain with 17.75 and Hana Faraj Al Farhan from Kuwait with 17.35.

Ahlam won the 400m in 1.03 minutes followed by Sameera Al Harasi from Oman in 1.06 and Latifa Hassan from Kuwait in 1.08.

Mariam Al Ansari from Bahrain won the gold in the high jump after clearing 165cm followed by her compatriot Noura Ebrahim (150) and Hana Marzoog form Kuwait with 138.

Bahraini Basma Mohammad won the shot putt with 10.26 metres followed by Buthaina Dhawi from Qatar with 9.56 and Mariam Marzoog from the UAE (7.29).

Fastest women

Nour Hussain Al Malki form Qatar became the fastest woman in the GCC states after winning the 100m sprint in 12.81 seconds followed by Fatima Amer from Bahrain with 12.87 and Fatima Sasani from Qatar with 13.2 seconds.

"I am overjoyed with this medal and I dedicate it to the Amir of Qatar for his continuous support to the sector of youth and sports in our country." Al Malki said after the presentation.

In the 100m for the Special Needs, the deaf category, Asma Al Matawaa from Bahrain came first followed by Hakima Al Sayabi from Oman in second place and UAE's Fatima Al Mass in third place.

Qatar to host inaugural basketball tournament

The first ever GCC Women's Basketball Championship will be held in Doha, Qatar, from April 22-28 with the participation of the UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain and hosts Qatar.

The draw for the tournament was made on Wednesday during the Games and the five teams will compete in a round robin league with the winner of most points winning the title.
