Doha: Qatar will play host today to the Triathlon World Cup, the first to be held in the Middle East, organisers said yesterday.

The International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Cup Series will see 25 elite teams compete for the world title, whose first leg starts here in Doha before moving to Aqaba, Jordan on March 10.

Some of the top teams that will be seen in action are the US, Australia, New Zealand, France, Spain and Switzerland.

Athletes will jockey for a piece of the $100,000 prize purse and world cup points for the start of the qualification period for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, beginning June 1.

The Triathlon event will begin from the Corniche with a 1,500-metre swim and then a 40km cycling race before heading for the finish with a 10km run.
