Dubai: Hosts Our Own English High School, Dubai emerged as the champions in the Inter-School Athletic Championship for girls held at the Dubai Police Stadium.

It was the 14th edition of this athletic meet being organised by Our Own School. Over 500 athletes from 17 UAE schools took part in the meet.

Abu Dhabi Indian School emerged as runner-up after a full day of intense competition in almost all events.

Seven record were broken following the keen competition for supremacy. Our Own School, Dubai, registered a clean sweep by finishing first in the Sub juniors, juniors, inters, seniors and super seniors.

The girls who hogged the limelight were Dubai Our Own School's Farida Iqbal, Andrea Jesudasan and Misba Abbas and Abu Dhabi Indian School's Ramlah Rehman and Rabia Ebrahim.

It was a colourful meet from the start with Our Own School's choir team singing the theme song dressed in white and red dress. Our Own's sports captain Nisha Celina took the oath on behalf of all the athletes and the meet was inaugurated by Mona Lootah, the head of the Private Education, Dubai.

In the juniors shot put, Danielle of the Westminster School set a new record of 7.89 meters. She broke the previous record of 7.30 meters.

The the Inters Long Jump event, Andrea Jesudasan of Our Own School, Dubai recorded 4.47 meters. She erased the previous record of 4.21m. Andrea also went on to emerge as the inters individual champion.

The shot put event in the inters category too produced a record performance. Shirin Latheef of Our Own School Dubai wiped off the previous mark of 8.73 meters by recording a throw of 11.53 meters.

Rabia Ebrahim of Abu Dhabi Indian School sparkled in the Long Jump event. She covered a distance of 4.50 meters to wipe off the earlier record of 4.36 meters.

Rabia also went on to emerge as the individual champion in the Seniors division.

New mark

The high jump event in the senior event too saw a new mark being set. Eisha Ramrakhiani recorded 1.28 meters to sink the previous record of 1.20 meters.

In Super Seniors High Jump event too a new record was set by Jessica Jacob of Our Own School, Dubai. She registered 1.32 meters to erase the earlier mark of 1.25 meters.

Talking to Gulf News, Indu Singh the athletics coach of the Our Own School, attributed the success of her school to the hard work of her students.

"Every day we train from 6.30am in the school premises. We are winning this meet for the last 14 years," remarked Indu.

"We follow a proper selection policy and I provide correct technique training to the girls," added Indu, who has received specialised training as an athletics coach from the Laxmibhai Physical Education College in Gwalior.

Our Own girls athletics team had also won the overall championship in the Abu Dhabi inter school athletics meet too.

"We have 18 of our girls selected for the CBSE zonal athletic meet and we would strive harder to continue our dominance in inter school athletics," said Indu.

G.S. Madhav Rao, the principal of the Our Own School, Dubai congratulated the winners and stressed on the importance of sports in life.

The athletics meet also received excellent sponsorship support from Al Noor Sun Flower Oil, Stabilo and Rainbow Milk.

Our Own High School boys too had won the inter school athletic meet for boys, which was held last week, at the same venue.
