Dubai: The UAE's Shaikha Maitha Bint Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum was on Friday unanimously elected as the chairperson of the World Karate Federation Athletes Commission.

In a meeting held on the sidelines of the executive committee of the World Karate Federation (WKF) in Belgrade, Serbia, all members were unanimous in their choice of Shaikha Maitha to head the athletes' body for an additional four years.

Given this sort of backing and support from the international governing body for the sport, Shaikha Maitha will make her first presence on the WKF Athletes Commission during the 16th Guangzhou Asian Games to be held in southern China from November 12 to 27.

This is the second term that the world governing body has reaffirmed its support of Shaikha Maitha's contribution to karate and taekwondo in recent years.

Not only is the UAE sportswoman an active participant in various international competitions, she has overseen the development of sport among women in the UAE.
