Des Moines, United States: Kristin Castlin says the slight of being placed on the outside lane was all the motivation she needed to snap Brianna Rollins’ 19-race win streak in the 100 metre hurdles.
Castlin edged fellow American Rollins with a time of 12.571 seconds to win the race on the second day of the Drake Relays on Saturday.
“I had a little bit of a chip on my shoulder being in lane eight,” said Castlin. “I had to execute my best race since I was out there on my own.”
Rollins finished second in 12.576, halting a winning streak that dated back to the 2012 Olympic trials.
“I was surprised,” said Castlin. “This was my first race of the season.”
Rollins, who plans to runs next week in Jamaica, said she was not thinking about the streak.
“This was a great opener,” Rollins said. “I just wanted to run a relaxed race and tried to focus on myself.
“Someone else beat me to the line but that’s okay.”
France’s Renaud Lavillenie won the men’s pole vault by clearing 5.70 metres at Drake Stadium. Steve Lewis matched his height but finished second because of more misses.
Mark Hollis finished third with 5.60 metres.
“I’m happy with this victory, because I managed some good jumps,” Lavillenie said. “I took this contest as a challenge. It gives me confidence.”
American Tiffany Ross Williams won the women’s 400 metre hurdles in 55.53 seconds while Chaunte Lowe took the women’s high jump by clearing 1.96m.
