Beijing: Indian athletes, whose history in world championships is nothing to be proud of, will begin their 2015 campaign in Beijing on Sunday, with shot putter Inderjeet Singh facing the severest test of his fledging career and three 20km walkers seeking to post their personal bests.

India have won just one bronze in the 32-year-old history of the championships through long-jumper Anju Bobby George in the 2003 edition in Paris.

Discus thrower Vikas Gowda will be the one India will be banking upon for their best finish, if not a medal. The national record holder has competed in the most top flight events this year, including a few legs of the Diamond League series, even winning a bronze in Shanghai in May. He will have both his qualification and final round events on Thursday.

Baljinder Singh, Chandan Singh and Gurmeet Singh will be the Indian faces in men’s 20km walk, the starting event for Indians early on Sunday. Gurmeet, double Asian championships medallist in 2012 and 2013, has been listed 27th among 62 entered in the event.

Asian champion and World University Games gold medallist Inderjeet will be the other Indian featuring on Sunday. The 27-year-old has a personal best of 20.65 metres.
