Dubai: Hanan Ebrahim Zouaydi and Hessa Mohammad representing the Sharjah Ladies Club (SLC) claimed top honours in the American University of Sharjah (AUS) marathon held at the Sharjah University City earlier this week.

Hanan, a member of SLC's first basketball team, finished first in the under-17 category while Hessa was first to cross the finish line in the under-12 category.

The annual event was held under the auspices of His Highness Dr. Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah and Chairman of AUS. This was the 10th marathon under the slogan "We can end poverty" with the Student Affairs of the Department of Community Service, AUS organising the event. Lending their support was the Sharjah Sports Council and the office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with support from the Sharjah Charity Association.

Huge response

More than 1,500 runners from at least 50 educational institutions and universities from Sharjah took part in this event along with special category races over shorter distances for members of the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services and Sharjah Ladies Club.

Ahmad Nasser Al Fardan, Secretary-General, Sharjah Sports Council, presented the winners with medals and prizes.
