Dubai: The organising committee of second GCC Games has decided to honour the memory of the late Shaikh Rashid Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum by naming the endurance medals after him.

Prince Abdul Hakim from the Higher Organising Committee announced late on Monday that the endurance medals would bear the name of Shaikh Rashid in memory of the late champion’s gold medals at the 2006 Doha Asian Games and at the 2011 GCC Games in Bahrain.

Endorsed by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), the Second GCC Games will be held in Dammam on the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia from October 15-26.

“This is one of the finest sporting gestures from our brotherly nation of Saudi Arabia as we try to remember a true champion,” Omar Abdul Rahman, Manager of the UAE squad to Dammam told Gulf News.

“I am sure Shaikh Rashid was an inspiration as one of the top sportspersons in the UAE. And now after his demise this gesture can only help us keep his memory alive longer,” he added.

The UAE is sending a total of eight athletes and three officials in the endurance that is scheduled to be held on October 16-17.
