Dubai: The fourth edition of the Commercial Bank of Dubai (CBD) Youth Athletics Competition will get under way at the Dubai Police Officers Club in Al Garhoud on Monday.
The opening day of the competition will be for under-16 boys, starting with the 100 metres race followed by the high jump and shot put events. The remaining four events for the senior boys will be for the long jump, 400 metres, 800 metres and finally the 4x100 metres relay race.
Held under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman, Dubai Sports Council (DSC), the CBD Youth Athletics Competition is driven by the vision to create, foster and develop inter-school sporting contests while also bringing together local communities.
This is the fourth edition of the inter-schools competition and organisers are expecting more than 2,000 children in six age groups to participate during the preliminary rounds this month.
After two days of preliminary qualifying rounds for boys on November 17 and 18, qualifying competitions for girls will be held at the same venue on November 24-25. The grand finals for both boys and girls will be held on January 24.
Last week, Murray Sims of CBD announced the hosting of the annual event in the presence of Dr Haya Ebrahim Bin Saifan, Director, Environment and Events, Dubai Educational Zone and Abdullah Shahdad, from DSC.
The competition has been growing since it was first launched in 2011. Last year’s competition attracted more than 1,800 athletes from 82 schools from across Dubai and the grand finals were held earlier this year.
As sponsors, CBD distribute cash prizes worth Dh500,000 to outstanding athletes and schools topping the various competitions in different age categories.
