Dubai: The UAE’s Mohammad Al Kamali has been appointed as a member of the International Council of Arbitration of Sport (CAS).

Al Kamali, who is part of a series of CAS meetings currently being held in Evian, France, was informed about his appointment yesterday.

The CAS is composed of 20 board members, who are experienced jurists in their own right. Four members are appointed by the International Federations (Ifs), four members by the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC), four by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), four by the 12 members of ICAS following appropriate consultations and the last four by the 16 members of ICAS listed above.

Created in 1984, CAS is an institution independent of any sports organization which provides services to facilitate the settlement of sports-related disputes through arbitration or mediation by means of procedural rules adapted to the specific needs of the sports world. The CAS has nearly 300 members from 87 countries chosen for their specialist knowledge of arbitration and sports law.

All CAS members are appointed for one or several renewable period of four years each. Dr Abdullah Al Hayyan from Kuwait is one of the prominent personalities who is on the board of CAS, while Saleh Al Obaidli, a lawyer and Managing Partner of Saleh Al Obaidli Advocates and Legal Consultants was approved as one of the general arbitrators on CAS last year.

Earlier in 2012, Abu Dhabi joined the CAS family after being accepted to set up a CAS Chamber, thus becoming the first nation to house a specialized arbitration centre outside the CAS Headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.

One of the highlights of the CAS centre in Abu Dhabi is that all arbitration laws have now been made available in Arabic, facilitating better accessibility to sports clubs and players from the entire Gulf region.
