Minneapolis: Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson says he doesn’t plan on playing anymore this season unless the Vikings can turn their season around.

Peterson said it would be “pointless” to play again this season if the team is out of contention for the play-offs.

When asked Wednesday if he would consider playing if the club was mathematically eliminated from the postseason, he said “No, I wouldn’t.”

Peterson’s comments differ from head coach Mike Zimmer who has said the running back’s health would be the determining factor in whether he returns this season.

The Vikings have lost six of their last seven games after winning their first five games of the season.

“I’m thinking we’re going to make the play-offs, so that’s what I’m keeping my mindset on,” he said. “If that’s not the case a week or two from now, we can settle back around.”

Peterson suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee in September and had surgery 11 weeks ago.

He said he is a quick healer and that physically he will be ready when the time comes.

“I feel like I’m there. Mentally, that’s how I feel and I feel like I was there six weeks ago,” Peterson said.

“I guess that’s why I’m able to heal a lot faster and jump over hurdles that people wouldn’t expect me to be jumping over as of now.”

Peterson, who has gained 50 yards this season on 31 carries, has 11,725 career rushing yards and has ran for 97 touchdowns.

He will make $12 million (Dh44 million) next season.
