Los Angeles: New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton was still steamed on Friday over “extremely poor” officiating in his team’s NFL loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

While the league reviewed Payton’s behaviour toward the officiating crew — a standard procedure after he drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty late in the fourth quarter — the coach spoke further about his frustrations.

“I thought the officiating was extremely poor,” said Payton, whose Saints fell 20-17 in Atlanta. “Inconsistent would be a great way to put it, and I thought that had a lot to do with the way this game ended.

“It’s frustrating when you have a game, instead of it being decided on the field like it’s supposed to, you have a crew make so many mistakes in one event.”
