Schumacher wins Italian Grand Prix

2000 - A tearful Michael Schumacher delivered a dream result for Ferrari’s fanatical fans when he won his third Italian Grand Prix in a race marred by multiple crashes on the first lap. The race was marred by the death of a fire safety official, struck on the head by a flying tyre after a spectacular six-car crash on the first lap. The official, Paolo Ginslinberti, 30, was given heart massage at the track side and taken by helicopter to hospital where he died later. Seven cars dropped out as the field was forced to drive behind the safety car for the next 10 laps. Schumacher, in a Ferrari, took his sixth race of the season and 41st of his career as he finished the 53 laps of the 5,792-kilometre Monza Autodrome 3.8 seconds ahead of Mika Hakkinen’s McLaren-Mercedes.
