Introduction

Sometimes, it’s not photographic techniques or special attention to light or composition that matters. All it takes to create a perfect photograph is to be at the right place at the right time. Last month, our diligent reader photographers were fortunate enough to witness some spectacular moments on camera. Photo Editor Devadasan K. P. chooses the three best reader pictures published during the month of March.

FIRST

Prasad Perakam

Prasad Perakam, 30, a creative designer in an advertising agency, enjoys freezing expressions, play of light and moments of action. The Dubai resident said: “My affection towards pictures brought me to photography. I like taking pictures of different expressions of people because they always have a hidden meaning.” The Indian national from Kerala believes that photography is all about the way light falls on the subject you are focusing on.

Reason for winning: The reader captured a magical moment during early morning hours with a sun beam falling on the elephant. Great composition!

SECOND

Rogin Quiño

Philippines national Rogin Quiño, 26, discovered his love for photography when he was given a photo assignment towards the end of his college degree to capture different activities around his university. Being a part of the Student Body Organization Quiño enjoyed taking action pictures at sport events. As a photographer, he also went on field trips organised by the college. He said: “I enjoyed photography so much that I knew there was no looking back.”

Reason for winning: This is a very vibrant picture. Good use of the wide lens.

THIRD

Shajitha Shifa

Shajitha Shifa, 19-year-old computer science engineering student in Dubai, discovered an interest in photography during her summer vacation last year. She began reading online blogs of famous photographers. She said: “My parents, being very supportive of my newly-discovered passion, decided to buy me a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera. This is when I decided to take my hobby more seriously. I started participating in photography competitions, including the one by Gulf News and this further encouraged me.” Shifa likes to use her lens at high shutter speed. She said: “I love taking pictures at night and pictures of water splashes, setting my camera at a high shutter speed. It is amazing to see the frozen split of a second that would otherwise go unnoticed.”

Reason for winning: The is a perfect frame captured of a compassionate moment between the two.
