Every month, Gulf News readers share their best photographs with the newspaper. We received several compelling entries during the month of July. Our Deputy Picture Editor Sankha Kar faced a hard time in selecting the best ones. Kar said: “The winning pictures were selected based on their uniqueness and the skills of the photographer. In these pictures it is clear that the photographer had to be patient and frame the shot in his mind, before you could pick up his lens. ” Here are the winners for the month of October.

FIRST PLACE - Hanif M. Kalmata

Hotelier Hanif M. Kalmata says “photography is the best way to capture the beautiful nature and moods of people around us”. The Dubai-resident has been passionate about photography for a few years now. He said: “Colours are what make or break the picture. I like capturing the Nature and spontaneous reactions of people the most.”

Reason for winning: The key element of this picture is the perspective and the angle of light. Very well composed photograph and the drama created by the shadow is striking.

SECOND PLACE - Mohammad Razeq

Indian national Mohammad Razeq says he “loves to freeze a moment in time”. The 30-year-old has a passion for photography and his favourite forms are landscape, wildlife, portraits, macro and street photography.

Reason for winning: Wildlife photography is always difficult and capturing birds in flight is more. The angle is also a plus point of this picture.

THIRD PLACE - Aum Bansal

Eleven years old Aum Bansal recently discovered his love for photography. He said: “I like photography so that I can remember what happened in the past. I like to take pictures of Nature because our beautiful Nature makes me feel closer to God.”

Reason for winning: This one is a very good architectural photography. Well exposed and the reflection of the arches on the water is the real beauty.

Photography Tips

By and large, follow the ‘Rule of Third’ during the placement of your subject within the frame.

Select an appropriate viewpoint or a suitable angle rather than normal, eye-level shooting.

Make optimum utilisation of the metering system of the camera for best exposure.
