Karachi: Paramilitary rangers on Sunday arrested one of the most wanted sectarian militants, Qari Abdul Al Hai, who was heading the Sindh chapter of the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, his head money was fixed at 5 million rupees (Dh0.18 million).

Al Hai, who was also known as Qari Asad and Talha, was wanted in connection with numerous terrorist activities in Karachi and the province.

He was arrested during a raid at his hideout along University Road.

Al Hai is a resident of Alipur in the southern Punjab province.

His arrest is seen as an important one in the city’s security circles as he or his group were allegedly involved in many high-profile terror activities in Karachi in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent war on terror.

Al Hai was also indicated to be involved in the murder of US journalist Daniel Pear who was kidnapped here in 2002 while working on a story on the Al Qaida network.

Al Hai’s name was also mentioned in the deadly attack the same year on a bus carrying French engineers working on a submarine project in Karachi. In the attack 16 people, including 12 French engineers and technicians, were killed outside a five-star hotel.
