Our debate this week is based on a reader suggestion by Mohana Iyer. According to Mohana, tablets are too much of a distraction in the classroom, and as a result, students fail to acquire necessary knowledge. Another important aspect is the fact that tablets are too expensive and so it marginalizes those who cannot afford it, and in turn it creates a ‘digital divide’. Meanwhile, supporters say that tablets increase student interactivity and creativity, saves the environment by lowering the amount of printing and argue that e-books are cheaper than printed textbooks.

The focus of this week’s debate is whether tablets should replace textbooks in classrooms or if they should be removed altogether?

These are the statements to be debated:

• Tablets help students prepare better for a world immersed in technology.

• Tablets help students learn more material faster.

• Tablets cause too many distractions in classroom use, detracting from the learning experience

• Tablets are too expensive and marginalizes students who cannot afford it, creating a divide.

Participants will be required to clearly state whether they are ‘for’ or ‘against’ the statement and provide their supporting arguments for the same.
