Recently, it was found that the US National Security Agency (NSA) collected and stored almost 200 million text messages a day from around the world. This raises the question of individual privacy and if that is the price that one has to pay in order to protect society. Should there be limits as to how far authorities can go in order to protect us?

The focus of the debate this week is on privacy and the interest of the individual against the interest of society.

These are the statements to be debated:

• We must give up some of our privacy in order to be more secure.

• If you have nothing to hide, then you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.

• Organisations must respect an individuals need for privacy against societal concerns.

Participants will be required to clearly state whether they are ‘for’ or ‘against’ the statement and provide their supporting arguments for the same.
