According to the educationist and grammarian Nevile Gwynne, “Grammar is the start of thinking. And without thinking, you can’t make good decisions, and, if enough people don’t make the right decisions, the world becomes disastrous.” So, is the disappearance of grammar lessons a modern-day tragedy or has grammar simply become irrelevant as language is more about communication rather than spelling?

The focus of this week’s debate is on the death of grammar and whether or not it is a significant element to our thinking.

These are the statements to be debated:

• Grammar is pointless because language is about communication.

• When the educational process shifted from depth of content to person, quality dipped.

• Grammar is vital because it is the start of thinking.

Participants will be required to clearly state whether they are ‘for’ or ‘against’ the statement and provide their supporting arguments for the same.
