Recently, a well-known coffee chain announced that it would provide free college education to thousands of its workers without requiring that they remain with the company. The company said that by offering their workers free education it would be “accreted to our brand, our reputation and our business”. So, in the end, the company would maximise its profit while the employee would have gained a free college education.

The focus of this week’s debate is on corporate social responsibility (CSR) and whether or not it is an opportunity for companies to give back to the community.

These are the statements to be debated:

• CSR is another way of advertising.

• CSR only works to maximize profits, rather than maximising human and environmental well-being.

• CSR gives big companies a chance to give back to the community.

Participants will be required to clearly state whether they are ‘for’ or ‘against’ the statement and provide their supporting arguments for the same.
