Is good grades a green card to success or does it simply determine your capability to do well in a specific course? According to Paul Smith, author of “Everyone Leads: Building Leadership from the Community Up”, a college degree does not equate to someone’s level of intelligence or talent. Academic performance is seen as a gateway to employment, career and better standard of living, however, that is not to say that one cannot succeed unless you have a college degree. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates managed without the benefit of holding any degree, so, is academic performance irrelevant?

The focus of our debate this week is on academic performance and whether or not it automatically leads to success.

Following are the statements to be debated:

• Academic performance is a good indicator of success but not a guarantee.

• How well you do in school does not matter, it’s determination and hard work that predicts success.

• Good grades merely determine your capability to do well in a specific course.

• A college degree is the gateway to employment.

Participants will be required to clearly state whether they are ‘for’ or ‘against’ the statement and provide their supporting arguments for the same.
