My company used to credit my salary in my account with RAKBANK. I got my tenancy contract and currently have a flat in Sharjah’s Rolla area. For the annual rent, I need to submit two post-dated cheques to the real estate company.

I approached RAKBANK’s Rolla branch and applied for a cheque book. The receptionist told me that within three working days, I would get it. But nothing came.

After one week, I again went to the bank and asked for the status of my request. She told me that they have some problem with the online system, and that I have to try at an ATM. But when I tried, I got an error message slip from ATM. Again I showed this to the receptionist, she guided me to the customer care representative.

He told me that Bank’s policy is that the minimum monthly salary should be Dh5,000 to get a cheque book. I told him my situation and said that if they wanted to charge for a cheque book, they could take it. He said I would need to open another account with RAKBANK, keeping a minimum of Dh3,000 deposited in the account, to get a cheque book. If the minimum balance fell below Dh3,000, they would charge Dh25 per month. But I cannot do that.

To get the tenancy contract, the Sharjah government’s rule is the monthly salary should be Dh4,000 only. I am eligible for the same and the same amount is coming every month to the bank account as my salary. Now for my rent I have to submit two cheques. What should I do? Kindly consider and please help me on this issue.

From Mr Charles Varghese

Sharjah

Mr Ian Hodges, Head of Personal Banking, RAK Bank, responds:

Mr Varghese holds a current account and currently does not meet the eligibility criteria for a cheque book. Prior to receipt of his complaint from Gulf News, the customer was provided with suitable options, which were not accepted by him.

On receipt of your email, we have again contacted Mr Varghese and clarified the matter.

(Process initiation: October 1. Response from organisation: October 2.)
