Mission possible
I would like to thank everyone who donated to our Cambodian Humanitarian Drive to send a six-metre-long container full of essential items to KaisKids — www.kaiskids.org (‘Help the orphans in Cambodia’, Gulf News, August 2). After many weeks of collecting and sorting, we are glad to say that the container left for Cambodia on September 10 — two days ahead of schedule. We have been overwhelmed with such a positive response from everyone and we were amazed at everyone’s generosity and good wishes for what we were trying to achieve. We really could not believe it. There are so many wonderful and caring individuals. These pictures show what we have been up to the past few weeks along with the loaded container before we closed the door. What a great feeling that was. Thank you again to everyone.

A toast to the UAE
I have been living in the UAE for a long time and I have witnessed the generosity of its people. The authorities and its people have always helped others who were in need. This demonstrates its people’s open-mindedness regarding what is happening around the world.

My experience
I had a wonderful day on the Metro last week. I rode from Al Ghubaiba station to Dubai Health Care City station on the first train. I took pictures of the city and the interiors of the stations throughout the journey. I then went from Health Care City station to Etisalat station and got down at Al Fahidi station. I later rode the Metro to buy school uniforms for my children at Oud Metha. The duration of the journey within Bur Dubai is short. Later in the evening I went to Terminal 3 and changed trains at Union Square station. The most interesting thing is that all these rides did not exceed Dh14. Will this be the best advantage for using the Metro? Congratulations Dubai.

Charm
E-books cannot replace normal books. It is the same as television not replacing radio. Reading normal books has a kind of unique charm.

Books live on
Even though e-books have taken the world by storm, I think nothing can ever take the place of the traditional paperback. The old smell of paper, the end-of-page mysteries and what not. Books are still there.

Stick with paper
I like e-books, but I am a little conservative. I love reading regular books still. The smell of every page and touching a real paper is more dramatic.

Changing society
I do not think parents who try to encourage independence are reckless (‘Focus: Parenting’, Gulf News, September 16). Today’s young parents are yesterdays teenagers who might have been brought up under rules set by their elders, and who ultimately wanted and craved for independence of their own. It is only natural for them to allow their children a fair share of independence. This cannot be called recklessness, but rather a step towards a better society. Only when an individual brings change within themselves or their family does change in society take place.
