Don’t allow abuse

Domestic abuse is a sad reality faced by many women (‘Even educated women are abuse victims’, Gulf News, May 19). Dubai Foundation for Women and Children is doing a great job by helping them and improving their lives. These women become very vulnerable and need all the support they can get to turn their lives around. They need to always believe in themselves and never let anyone lower their confidence and self-esteem, no matter what. Education plays an important role and so does upbringing. Parents should never discriminate between their sons and daughters. Along with a sound education, they must also give daughters a strong feeling of self-worth and independence. Sons should be taught to respect all women and always remember that in no way is a woman less than any man. They should know that abusing a woman in any way is totally unacceptable. Parents and society should never force women to be patient and continue living with their abusers, but encourage them to move away if the abuser does not relent. Patience is not a virtue in every situation but often, courage is. Women tend to remain with abusive husbands for the sake of their children. However, what they don’t realise is that children who watch their mothers being abused often become abusers themselves or become psychologically disturbed and withdrawn.

Something is wrong

Every day, I read in the newspapers about a new accident of a truck, bus or minibus driver (‘Minibus crashes into bank after dodging taxi in Sharjah’, Gulf News, May 19). There must be something wrong here. Should these drivers actually be driving? I think rules and regulations of driving licenses issued should be urgently reviewed and those drivers should bear great consequences. The other day, I saw a taxi driver who didn’t move when the traffic lights turned green, even after I honked. It turned out that apparently, he had fallen asleep!

Due to daily routine

It’s true that driver’s licenses should be issued by carefully examining the person’s abilities. However, due to lack of sleep, and the stressful routine of daily life, we are not able to concentrate well. Taxi drivers work long hours and the pressures of work force them to complete their daily targets regardless of how tired they are, thus leading to accidental errors. I hope everyone recovers from this unpleasant incident.

Quality of life issue

We need to improve the standard of living of the people who are driving all day. They are working long hours, with lots of stress on the roads and people aren’t always respectful to them.

Disruptive drivers

This morning, while I was on my way to the office, and when the signal turned green at a traffic light, I drove off right away, yet the man behind me was honking and being disruptive. People don’t want to wait for a second longer than they have to and some of them seem to even enjoy irritating other drivers. It is really unacceptable.
