Hits close to home

Tears welled up in my eyes as I read the report about the students who returned money to an old woman (‘Roommates buy lumpy used couch, find $40,000 in cash’, Gulf News, May 16). I too, found my mother’s secret stash of money, hidden under a pile of clothes, one year after her death. I gave it all away to charity. She lived with people she did not fully trust and they continued to reside in the house after her death and used the cupboard with the hidden money, day in and day out, but were not able to spot it. I went home after a year and opened the cupboard and there it was — as if she only wanted me to find it.

Be helpful

If you do good, you will encourage good. If you are cheated, you will probably resent it and be tempted to cheat another person. Some years ago, I lost my wallet in Karama and the person who found it tracked me down and returned it. Since then, although I have not found lost items, I try my best to help those in need. Being fair is essential for any society. It felt very nice to read such positive reporting.

The real teachers

I really wish that all of us could be like these noble and honest students. We call them students but I think they deserve to be called teachers and we all should learn from them.

Keep going

Youngsters are role models in the modern age, where one tends to get corrupted easily. Values of honesty and truthfulness are not yet dead. God bless them abundantly with more courage to keep on doing good.

Good begets good

This would have been the best day of the old woman’s life. She has found hope and mercy. The same karma would one day return to the young people, who did the right thing by returning the money.

India’s victory

It has been a great day for the world’s largest democracy (‘India election 2014: Narendra Modi to be elected leader of BJP Parliamentary Party on May 20’, Gulf News, May 17). Indians have elected Narendra Modi as their prime minister. He comes from a humble and poor family, and is a leader who has worked very hard to reach his current position, unlike many others who survive in politics only because of their family’s political background. Modi’s victory is India’s victory and he will certainly bring about development and clear out corruption in India.

Desire for change

It is a very happy moment for Indians that the new government has finally arrived in India. The public has made clear to the country’s political leaders, their desire for change in their lifestyle, with peace, security, prosperity and development in all fields, which they failed to get from Congress. By placing great hopes on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for a better life, Indians have helped give them a resounding victory and success. Now, political leaders in the country should realise that they can’t cheat or rule people with their underhand tricks. They must be aware that their future in politics is in the hands of the people.

‘Modi’fied

The upcoming federal government in India should try and fulfil the promises made under previous administrations. The poll verdict was straightforward and a change was imminent. The century-old Indian National Congress (INC) could not make it happen. Now, people should have the patience to wait and see how the ‘magic wand’ of a ‘Modi’fied India works for tomorrow.

Calming fears

I hope and pray that this time, Modi’s party doesn’t hurt the Indian Muslim community both physically and economically, and history doesn’t repeat itself. I refer to the 2002 Gujrat riots. Best wishes to the new prime minister and I hope he will work for the peace and prosperity of the entire country.

Let go of hatred

It is disappointing to see uninformed and biased comments about the unfortunate events in Gujarat, 12 years ago. Holding on to hatred is like drinking poison from a cup and hoping the other person will die. Please remember that over 550 million Indians voted in a free and fair election process. If you do not like the mandate of these free citizens, put up a candidate who can provide good governance rather than blindly supporting a foreign family who misruled India for 10 years and did nothing but patronise the so-called minorities for the purpose of votes only.
