Stop animal abuse!

People firmly believe they’re superior to animals. If we go ahead with that premise, we could safely presume that it means man is more intelligent. However, actions appear to belie this assumption. We abuse with consistent cruelty animals that cannot defend themselves. And if they so much as attempt to do so, they’re promptly labelled as dangerous, vicious and unsuitable for companionship. It makes you question the so-called superior intellect of man. Perhaps it is time to step down the pedestal and understand that we are not superior but rather inferior in our conduct against animals. You just need to look around and see the number of abandoned animals to see proof of this. Stop mistreating animals, be worthy of your humanity and faith.

Death penalty

The death penalty is always a highly fractious debate. There are some crimes that many feel deserve capital punishment. However, there are those who argue against it – what is the point of responding to violence with violence, they ask. It makes us on a par with those violent criminals because of our desire of violent retribution. I’m not sure if someone you love is a victim of crime, one could have a truly humanitarian response.

Women are not play things

This is so ironic (‘Madhya Pradesh home minister says ‘rape sometimes right, sometimes wrong’’, Gulf News, June 6). If someone were to subject the home minister’s daughter to similar abuse, would he pass the same comment? He should rather focus on enforcing better laws for protection of women in India. Women are not toys or pieces of tissue that one plays with or uses and throws away. The public should really step up and voice their opinion against the evil that women are subjected to.

Growing problem

This issue of rape is not only a problem for India but for the rest of region as well. Tourists from many other countries may stop visiting these areas because they read or hear about such incidents. India must take immediate action to curb this rapidly increasing frustration level. If newly incumbent ministers are allowed to pass such statements, what can we expect from others?

Always wrong

The politician’s statement should be held under the microscope. He is a minister and has an audience, a following. He should be careful about the kinds of comments he makes. This one was exceptionally ridiculous. Rape is always wrong.

Just ignore

I would call this ‘dirty politics’. It might be that the minister was unable to attract people’s attention, so he used a hot topic to do so. The public and media should ignore such people and their comments.

Irresponsible

Such comments should never be taken lightly or dismissed. If politicians are making such irresponsible statements, they should be suspended from their posts. Politicians like these are a rising problem in India.

Hopeless situation

If government ministers believe this, then there is no hope to change the minds of other men. Rape can never be right. Women are never possessions.

Violent crime

I’m flabbergasted by the comment of the home minister. Firstly, the relevant regional Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders failed to visit the village of Katra Shahadatganj, where the two girls were raped and hanged last week. Now, they presume to dismiss one of the most violent acts a human being can commit as a social crime — one that apparently can only be considered to have been committed if it is reported to police. How insensitive and ludicrous! It’s time Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, cracked down on his ministers and others in positions of authority. Such comments do not augur well for the government of a country that is home to millions of strong, proud women — all of whom deserve respect.
