Poor play

Agree 100%! (‘Gulf News: ‘Looking at Spain’s performance, do you think playing club football affects player performance when it comes to playing for their home countries?’, June 19) They took their victory for granted I guess. By far, they didn’t at all play like champions and let down their country and fans.

From Ms Mary Young

Practice makes perfect

The thing is, you can never say that playing club football or world championship football makes a difference. It’s anyway all just football. Playing means more practice. ‘Practice makes a man perfect’, isn’t it? And considering Spain, or even Brazil for that matter, good players always play. It’s often a matter of tactics or luck or it may just be a bad day for them. Who are we to evaluate them? Just enjoy the play. We are only the audience.

From Mr Don Joe Martin

Too much exposure

Spain’s poor performance is definitely due to playing club football.

From Mr Waheed Hassan

Doesn’t matter?

In the case of Spain, it shouldn’t have mattered. More than half their team plays for Barcelona. It should have been easier, if anything, for Barcelona to win. Oops, I mean Spain!

Cricket

It’s the same with cricket. Look at [Kieron] Pollard and [Chris] Gayle, they hardly perform for West Indies!

Not humble enough

They were overconfident this time.

Match fixing?

I think it’s all been fixed.

Safety concerns

The whole discussion is about safety (Gulf News: ‘Dubai Mall’s new crocodiles evoke mixed reactions’, June 18). Human safety. What about animal welfare? Is it a good idea to lock crocodiles up after transporting them thousands of kilometres? I don’t think so... they should be wild and free!

From Ms Wendy Ligier-Troost

Muscat, Oman

Just a handbag away!

I agree with you Wendy, but with poaching being as widespread as it is, this magnificent animal could end up as a handbag in a departmental store! Sometimes, captivity is the only option to keep them safe, away from the grasping, greedy hands of poachers.

From Ms Devleena Dey Chatterjee

Not a vegan, yet

I am guessing all those who are objecting are vegans. I don’t agree with mistreating animals and it’s a nightmare to think of what we do in some of the meat, dairy industries. Still, where I see that the animal is reasonably comfortable and gets fed, I try not to say much, as I am not a vegan yet.

From Ms Audrey Fonseca

Dubai

Freedom for all

How can anyone say that the ones objecting are vegans? I’m sure even if you’re not vegan, you’re most likely not eating crocodile meat, too. All wild animals should live free in their habitats. It doesn’t matter if they are safe or not. It’s better to be free than held in captivity. You don’t need to be vegan to care for animals, especially wild ones!

Respect employee privacy

No, because social media is just for people to express themselves (Gulf News: ‘Do you think it is valid for employers to use social media to evaluate their future?’, June 18). Such behaviours are not brought to work. On the other hand, employers have the right to hire whoever they choose to, even if that means looking you up on social media to get a good idea of you.
