A heroic effort

I was driving back to Abu Dhabi from Dubai the other night on Shaikh Zayed Road when I saw a van losing control. It skidded across the lanes and flipped over to its side on the fast lane. The car following the van stopped on the side of the road and three Emirati women ran across to the aid of the trapped driver. From the colour of their clothes they seemed to be returning from a celebration. The youngest of these women, clad in a bright yellow gown, ran right across the lanes, waving hers arms frantically to slow down the fast oncoming traffic while the eldest one, wearing a black abaya, approached the van and helped the dazed, bleeding driver out from his van. Fuel was leaking from the van, yet the brave young women were determined to help the man. The driver was pulled to safety and was made to sit down to one side while the other two women continued their efforts to prevent further accidents. The three women were a shining example to the noblest sentiment of human spirit. I do not know who these women are but never in my life have I seen a more impressive show of courage. To these women, whoever you are, I salute your noble spirit. This country is blessed to have citizens like you.

Not enough resources
It’s very hard being a single parent, especially when it comes to the education of the children (‘Making ends meet for single parents’, Gulf News, March 31). We want our children to study in good schools but the cost of living is too high and it leaves us with no choice but to compromise on the quality of education. I think there should be at least discounts in this case for children who have a single parent.

Real heroes
I’ve heard many good stories of people, especially taxi drivers, in Dubai who return lost valuables to the owners (‘Driver’s special delivery from Pakistan to India’, Gulf News, March 31). May God bless them.

An honest man
I have no words but tears in my eyes after reading this report. We are all proud of you Akram. You are an honest person and a hero. God bless you and I wish you success and prosperity in your long and healthy life. Thank you very much for adding a few good things to our country’s name.

Never got it back
I lost my wallet which had Dh4,500 cash, four credit cards, a driving licence, car registration, labour card and Emirates ID card. Forget the cash, I was hoping to get at least my credit cards and more importantly the ID cards. However, I never got them back. You can imagine how difficult it would be for me to apply for all the cards and get new ones — a lot of running around and time is required. I am proud of my fellow Pakistani brother Mohammad Akram, who was surely brought up well by his parents. He has proved that he is a gentleman.

Think of others
I was shocked to see the tables in a food court filled with half-eaten food and full water bottles. “The number of human beings who have no access to clean water is in the billions. Each year, we mourn millions of dead from the health risks that this causes,” French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said as he opened the World Water Forum. According to the United Nations there are over one billion people in the world today who do not get enough food to eat. This means that one in seven people on Earth are not sure when their next meal will be. Aren’t we supposed to count our blessings for every single drop of water we get and a morsel of food that we eat? Do we have the right to waste them indiscriminately? I would like to request Gulf News readers to spare a minute of their time and think of the billions for whom food and water is still a luxury.

Marvellous performance
It was a visual treat — what a splendid finish, I loved it (‘Monterosso wins the Dubai World Cup’, Gulf News, April 1)! Three cheers to Godolphin! Well done Monterosso and Mickael Barzalona.
