The case of an 11-year-old in Abu Dhabi who was beaten repeatedly by a group of boys in her school is shocking, sickening and profoundly disturbing. It's simply too difficult to fathom that Loujain Hussain should be fighting for her life, lying in a coma in Shaikh Khalifa Medical City after being attacked in her school.

The attack took place at Al Ma'ali International School last Thursday when an innocent school yard incident escalated into a vicious attack which left the girl with a brain haemorrhage.

While education officials — along with the police — are investigating the incident, there's one question that haunts us: Why?

Why did the attack take place? What got the group of boys — hardly teenagers — so enraged that they repeatedly kicked Loujain in her abdomen and head?

Is it the environment in which these boys are raised that led them to such violence? Have they seen too much violence at home? Have they spent too many hours playing violent video games or watching violence on television? Have they had adequate parenting? Have they been taught as they should at school?

Whatever the answers, Loujain, you are in our thoughts and prayers.
