The recent case of a Palestinian prisoner highlights an issue that has been ignored by Israel for a very long time — that is the conditions of thousands of Palestinian prisoners being held in Israeli prisons. Their plight and the conditions they have to endure in captivity should be addressed as such a situation has to come to an end.

The prisoner Khader Adnan represents the case of many other Palestinian prisoners. He has gone on a hunger strike since December 18, 2011 in protest against Israel imprisoning him without charge.

An independent UN human rights expert has expressed his concerns over the health of Adnan as it has seriously deteriorated over the past two months.

Richard Falk, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Occupied Territories said that the government of Israel must take effective and immediate action to safeguard Adnan's life.

He also added: "The improper treatment of thousands of Palestinian prisoners by the government of Israel should be of great concern to the international community."

No doubt, a lasting solution is required to end the miserable conditions which Palestinian prisoners are being exposed to — something that cannot be delayed any further.
