The wonders of the universe never cease to amaze us. Astronomers say the Milky Way, our own little patch of a galaxy that floats out there in the great void of space along with countless billions of other universes, is itself made of more than 17 billion planets that are similar to the Earth. And how many more that are not? It’s hard to get our small minds around such huge numbers — the size, scale and science space as we know it is enough to bring on a headache. Yet there is wonder that we are so small and insignificant on our little blue planet.

For all of its smallness in the great universe, the seven billion of us here can’t get along. We see the reasons that divide us, not the common bonds that unite us. We listen to those who make so much noise that we are deaf to the silence of those who are mute. And we live by what we want, not what we have. As a species, we have yet to learn how to fully live with one another.

At least we should take solace in the science of discovery.
