Racism is a scourge that has led to war, genocide and immense human suffering. It must be fought by everybody who respects others and values their different contributions to the world we share.

So the UAE must be proud of its contribution to the global struggle against racism. Last week the country presented its report on its efforts to combat racism to the international Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, created by the United Nations.

Dr Abdul Rahim Yousuf Al Awadhi, Assistant to the UAE Foreign Minister for Legal Affairs and International Organisations, said the country "has called for the right of all to live peacefully, irrespective of race, colour, lineage, nationality or ethnicity". He added that the UAE also opposed discrimination against women and people with disabilities and respected the rights of children.

This was not just an empty statement as the country has strong laws in place to prevent discrimination. But more importantly, while not perfect, the UAE has long been an example of a tolerant country where people from across the world can come together to live and work in peace.
