The scourge of drug smuggling has been a global burden on law-enforcing authorities as they work round the clock to apprehend the culprits. From the place of origin to the destination, the route followed by drug smugglers may or may not affect countries, but in helping to catch the criminals, global cooperation is the only way forward. In this regard, the role being played by Dubai Police is exemplary. Their intelligence led to the biggest international drug bust of 5,364 kg of hashish on September 18 this year that was heading for a West African destination from an Asian country.

Even though the drugs were not heading to the UAE, in keeping with its sense of responsibility towards the international community, it alerted the Coalition Naval Forces, which successfully apprehended the smugglers. In the last two years, the UAE’s keen intelligence gathering and timely action have resulted in four international drug busts that include a 5,714 kg hashish seizure, 1,571 kg of heroin and 500 kg of methamphetamine (locally known as shabu). This is a reiteration of the UAE’s commitment to be an important voice in the global community and work for a greater good.
