As the horse meat scandal gets more fierce by the day, drawing into its vortex multinational food giants, it is deeply comforting to know that the UAE is free from contamination of its meat products. None of the tainted brands, which have Europe in convulsions of dismay and shock, are imported into the UAE. In a world where food imports and exports are multi-billion dollar businesses, in which millions of brands criss-cross countries’ borders every day, the average consumer can often become an unsuspecting victim of foul play. While consumers are advantaged by the choice of global brands they are feted with, they are also disadvantaged due to their ignorance of what really goes into the end product they purchase. This is where governments step in to assure, and protect, consumers. The UAE government, with its state-of-the-art facilities for testing food products, strict laws that monitor the processes and procedures of food manufacturers has done an exemplary job in stamping out all fears in this regard. And till the horse meat issue is completely resolved, vigilance must be maintained.
