A recent news report out of Colombo highlighted the case of a Sri Lankan domestic worker, who had 27 nails removed from her body by doctors.
The report claimed that the nails were inserted by a Saudi Arabian family where the maid worked.
Saudi authorities are vehemently denying that the incident of abuse ever occurred. Whether the incident be true or not, the tale raises the issue of proper treatment of domestic workers.
Domestic workers, like any others who labour for money, deserves proper treatment at all times. While not of the same economic status nor social background, domestic helpers need to be treated with respect. It is necessary for all who hire domestic help to ensure that living conditions are reasonable, pay suitable and the treatment respectful. Domestic helpers toil for the same reason as anyone else — for a better life for all.
